A study of bushfires during dusk and night. With all works I selected a flat black ground to intensify colour and as a strong visual element. Pastels on paper and acyrlic on canvas create visions of raging bushfire. The concept that fire is nature’s cleansing and regenerative power for Australia’s evolved biosphere fascinates me. The works also reference the Romantic sublime – the awe and fear that beauty and immense power in Nature creates in all of us.
Fire is at the heart of Australia. Besides being vital for our environment bushfires are both dramatic and traumatic in our modern world. Names such as Ash Wednesday (VIC, SA), 16-18 Feb 1983 and Black Saturday (VIC), 7-8 Feb 2009 recall memories of devastation and loss.
