On the Road to Hill End, Study in Black, 2015, oil on canvas board, triptych, panels 30 x 30 cm.
This work was designed to be both a study for the much larger 3-metre triptych based on the same subject as well as an exercise in the grey scale using different blacks and whites. This work was done on three 30.5 x 30.5 cm. canvas boards.
I used five different commercial black paints, each with different tonal qualities, mixing them with Zinc white. Lead oxide white was used for the clouds only, offering a rich creamy affect.
