Pantony’s Crown, Capertee Valley, 2023, oil on board, 30.5 x 40.5 cm.
This painting is the result of a joyful two days painting in the Capertee Valley with friend and fellow artist Jenny McIntosh. It’s always wonderful to paint outdoors amongst it all, but the Capertee is something else. Only three hours west of Sydney, on the northern edge of the Blue Mountains, it is the second largest canyon in the world (next to the Grand Canyon). Sheer standstone cliffs plunge hundreds of metres and encircle the rich farmlands of Capertee Valley - a canyon that is over 30 km. wide.
Throughout the day the suns rays dance across these cliffs in an awe inspiring show of colour with morning yellows to sunset’s oranges and purples. At the foot of these cliffs wildlife abounds. Late afternoon and early morning are alive with wallabies and so many birds, including lots of majestic Wedgetail eagles - amazing.
This work was painted en plein-air with final touches completed in studio.
