Big Hole, Ellery Creek, 2017, Western MacDonnell Ranges, acrylic on canvas, 21.5 x 25.5 cm.
80 kms west of Alice Springs is Big Hole at Ellery Creek. Cutting through the Western MacDonald Ranges Ellery Creek is a sacred site for the Central and Western Arrernte people, with their associated stories of Honey Ant Dreaming and Fish Dreaming. Shaded by high red cliffs and its Red River and Ghost Gums, it’s a deep permanent waterhole. Here I swam, sketched and rested from the day’s scorching heat.
